During the course of my work, I try to give these abstract terms concrete contents relevant to the actual assignment, keeping in mind that what I am designing will be part of a place, part of its surroundings, that it will be used and loved, discovered and bequeathed, given away, abandoned, and perhaps even hated - in short, that it will be lived in, in the widest sense. Martin Heidegger gave the title "Bauen, Wohnen, Denken" "Building, Dwelling, Thinking" to an essay with his reflections on what it means when men build homes and live in specific places. Building, dwelling, and thinking are activities which belong together and which men use as ways to learn about and be part of the world. Heidegger observed that our thinking, as abstract as it may seem, is closely connected with our experience of place. This has something to do with the fact that man exists in places, that it is from places that he forms his rela- tionships with the world - or simply, that he lives in the world. Thus, the thought process is not abstract but works with spatial images. It has sensuous components.

Par goldberg brenda le lundi, juillet 24 , - Lien permanent. Peter Zumthor, Pritzker laureate , unarguably ranks among the most important contemporary architects. He is revered worldwide for the stringency of his architectural concepts, the clarity of his designs, his sensitiveness for location and context, and for his conscious and careful use of materials. Yet his lesser known residential buildings in Switzerland or the Field Chapel for Brother Klaus near Mechernich, Germany have also won great acclaim from architectural critics. Zumthor is much admired by students and teachers of architecture alike also for his philosophical approach to the task of building and for his writings on architectural thought. The new five-volume set is the first comprehensive monograph on Zumthor's work in more than fifteen years. Around 40 of his buildings and unrealised projects are presented in detail with brief descriptive texts by Zumthor himself, with photographs, sketches, drawings and plans.
Zumthor was born in Basel, Switzerland. His father was a cabinet-maker, which exposed him to design from an early age and he later became an apprentice for a carpenter in He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule arts and crafts school in his native city starting in
He is late, and I am a little apprehensive. Zumthor is something of a cult figure within architecture. His body of work may be relatively small, but his influence is huge. He is known for his uncompromising approach to his work, for his craftsmanship and his careful use of materials and light, which can be seen in his best known projects, including the Therme Vals thermal baths in Switzerland, the Kunsthaus Bregenz art gallery in Austria and the Kolumba Diocesan Museum in Cologne, Germany. He has been awarded most of the top architectural prizes, including the Pritzker Prize and the RIBA Gold Medal, and is widely admired by his fellow architects, perhaps because he seems to have achieved what so many dream of — completing a small number of carefully-selected projects to his own high standards, with no apparent compromises.

This publication, exquisitely designed to the architect's exacting standards, is the first complete survey of Zumthor's oeuvre. As exceptional as the architect. As exceptional as the architect's work itself, the book investigates eight realized buildings in detail, including the Home for the Elderly in Chur, the Gugalun House in Safiental, the Art Museum in Bregenz, Austria, and his best-known work, the Thermal Baths in Vals, Switzerland. Each of these projects is extensively illustrated with duotone photographs by British architectural photographer Helene Binet and is accompanied by plans as well as commentary written by Zumthor himself. This title also includes a list of projects, a biography of the architect, and an introduction by Zumthor.
In Zumthor won the competition for a museum and documentation center on the horrors of Nazism to be built on the site of Gestapo headquarters in Berlin. The project, called the Topography of Terror, was partly built and then abandoned when the government decided not to go ahead for financial reasons. The unfinished building was demolished in Email address:.
