What does it mean to be a person?
The image we get of incontinence from Aristotle, Aquinas, and Hare is of a battle or struggle between two contestants. Each contestant is armed with his argument or principle. There is, however, a competing image to be found in Plato, as well as in Butler and many others. Here there are three actors on the stage: reason, desire, and the one who lets desire get the upper hand. It is up to The Will to decide who wins the battle. If The Will is strong, he gives the palm to reason; if he is weak, he may allow pleasure or passion the upper hand. This second image is, I suggest, superior to the first, absurd as we may find both.
Problem of moral responsibility , the problem of reconciling the belief that people are morally responsible for what they do with the apparent fact that humans do not have free will because their actions are causally determined. It is an ancient and enduring philosophical puzzle. Historically, most proposed solutions to the problem of moral responsibility have attempted to establish that humans do have free will. But what does free will consist of? When people make decisions or perform actions, they usually feel as though they are choosing or acting freely. A person may decide, for example, to buy apples instead of oranges, to vacation in France rather than in Italy, or to call a sister in Nebraska instead of a brother in Florida.
To learn more about what is and is not considered philosophy for the purposes of this subreddit, see our FAQ. Posts must be about philosophy proper, rather than only tangentially connected to philosophy. Exceptions are made only for posts about philosophers with substantive content, e. Posts must not only have a philosophical subject matter, but must also present this subject matter in a developed manner. At a minimum, this includes: stating the problem being addressed; stating the thesis; stating how the thesis contributes to the problem; outlining some alternative answers to the same problem; saying something about why the stated thesis is preferable to the alternatives; anticipating some objections to the stated thesis and giving responses to them.

There is a disputation [that will continue] till mankind is raised from the dead, between the Necessitarians and the partisans of Free Will. Indeed, debates about free will have become more voluminous in the past century, especially in the latter half of it—so much so that it has become difficult to keep up with the latest developments. This handbook was compiled as a remedy in the form of a sourcebook or guide to current work on free will and related subjects for those who wish to keep up with the latest research.
way come to enjoy the freedom of the will. HARRY G. FRANKFURT. The Rockefeller University. 10 There is a difference between being fully responsible and being.
What Is a Person? What philosophers have lately come to accept as analysis of the concept of a person is not actually analysis of that concept at all. As it happens—though it seems extraordinary that this should be so—there is no common English word for the type of entity Strawson has in mind, a type that includes not only human beings but animals of various lesser species as well. Still, this hardly justifies the misappropriation of a valuable philosophical term. Unable to display preview.
Questions concerning the nature and existence of this kind of control e. We cannot undertake here a review of related discussions in other philosophical traditions. For a start, the reader may consult Marchal and Wenzel and Chakrabarti for overviews of thought on free will, broadly construed, in Chinese and Indian philosophical traditions, respectively.
