Between 48 million and million people are thought to experience suicide bereavement every year. Over the past decade, increased policy attention has been directed towards suicide bereavement, but with little evidence to describe the effect of exposure or to provide appropriate responses. We used a systematic approach to carry out a narrative review of studies of the effect of suicide bereavement on mortality, mental health, and social functioning, and compared them with effects from other bereavements.
Postvention is a term often used in the suicide prevention field. The definition below is from the U. National Guidelines. All settings should incorporate postvention as a component of a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention.
Experiencing the suicide of a close and significant person often signifies a major disruptive stressor, exacerbating the risks of social, physical, and mental health problems, and suicidal behavior in the bereaved individuals. Compared to other forms of bereavement, people bereaved by suicide may experience more shock or trauma related to the unexpected or violent nature of the death, and more feelings of abandonment, rejection, and shame. Compared with the general population, people bereaved by suicide have a higher risk of suicidal behavior, and mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse. Suicide bereavement also represents a risk factor for complicated grief.
JAMA Psychiatry. Adjusted relative rates ARRs were generated by generalized estimating equation models and adjusted for confounding factors. Suicide-bereaved and MVC-bereaved parents had very few differences on predeath to postdeath outcomes. Depression rate increases were greater for MVC-bereaved parents These consequences appear similar to those associated with MVC bereavement. Parents who lose offspring to suicide appear to be a vulnerable group even prior to their offspring's death.
We aimed to test the hypothesis that among people who experience sudden bereavement, loneliness is associated with post-bereavement suicide attempt and post-bereavement suicidal ideation, even when adjusting for network size. We analysed cross-sectional data collected in the UCL Bereavement Study, to identify respondents who had experienced sudden bereavement. We used multivariable logistic regression to test for an association between loneliness using a newly-developed eight-item loneliness measure and post-bereavement suicide attempt and suicidal ideation, adjusting for socio-demographic factors, pre-bereavement depression and self-harm, and network size. Among bereaved adults, loneliness was significantly associated with probability of post-bereavement suicide attempt AOR 1. There was no association between suicide bereavement and loneliness adjusted coefficient 0.
Summary: Several studies have found an association between greater availability of mental health care and reduced rates of suicide. In many studies, it is not clear whether these associations are attributable to a causal effect of access to mental health care or to some other factor associated with both suicide risk and the availability of mental health care such as urbanicity. Nevertheless, two studies that examine mental health parity laws using more-rigorous methods for establishing causal effects suggest that such laws, and improved access to care, may reduce suicide rates. Increased access to mental health services is commonly promoted as a strategy to decrease firearm violence and suicide. Indeed, organizations on opposite sides of gun regulation debates often agree that policies designed to improve access to mental health care offer a promising approach to reducing gun violence.
