Emerging adulthood, viewed through the lens of life course health development, has the potential to be a very positive developmental stage with postindustrial societies giving adolescents and emerging adults a greater opportunity for choice and exploration but also greater challenges with greater educational and social role requirements. This increased agency in the context of less structure is occurring as the human brain is still developing higher-level capacities such as executive functioning. The person-context interactions during EA are many and complex, leading to multiple different pathways through emerging adulthood. Those with sufficient economic and adult supports as well as personal resources and maturity will be more likely to choose well and embark on a positive trajectory during EA. Those lacking these resources, or those with physical and mental health or intellectual disabilities, may struggle during this period and experience a negative trajectory in the spheres of education, vocation, relationships, and health status.
The current state of research in identity develop is also critiqued, with the conclusion that, because most research to date has been based on the identity status model, and because this model and the methods used to investigate it are of dubious validity, much remains to be known about the most basic, fundamental questions of identity development. The narrative approach is advocated as a more promising model for future investigations, and the questions to be addressed by this approach are summarized. Emerging adulthood refers to a phase of the life span between late adolescence and early adulthood , as proposed by Jeffrey Arnett in a article from the American Psychologist. Arnett suggests emerging adulthood is the distinct period between 18 and 25 years of age where adolescents become more independent and explore various life possibilities. Arnett argues that this developmental period can be isolated from adolescence and young adulthood ,  although the distinction between adolescence and young adulthood has remained largely unclear over the last several decades. Coined by psychology professor Jeffrey Arnett, emerging adulthood has been known variously as "transition age youth,"   "delayed adulthood,"  "extended adolescence," "youthhood,"  "adultolescence,"  and "the twixter years. Compared to other terms that have been used, which give the impression that this stage is just a "last hurrah" of adolescence, "emerging adulthood" recognizes the uniqueness of this period of life. In the United States, young people in this age group typically live at home with their parents, are undergoing pubertal changes, attend middle schools and high schools, and are involved in a "school-based peer culture. It is, therefore, considered inappropriate to call young adults "adolescents" or "late adolescents".
