Physics of atoms and molecules. Bransden, B. Citation Export Print Permalink Translate. Abstract Abstract. Following a brief historical introduction to the subject the authors outline the ideas and approximation methods of quantum mechanics to be used later in the book. Six chapters look at the structure of atoms and the interactions between atoms and electromagnetic radiation.
The authors then move on to describe the structure of molecules and molecular spectra. Three chapters deal with atomic collisions, the scattering of electrons by atoms and the scattering of atoms by atoms. The concluding chapter considers a few of the many important applications of atomic physics within astrophysics, laser technology, and nuclear fusion.
Problems are given at the end of each chapter, with hints at the solutions in an appendix. Other appendices include various special topics and derivations together with useful tables of units.

As per our. This book aims to present a unified account of the physics of atoms and molecules from a modern viewpoint. It is based on courses given by the authors at Middle East Technical University, Ankara and Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, and is suitable for study at third and fourth year levels of an undergraduate course. For example, for each course you will find aims and objectives, the syllabus and its teaching and assessment methodology. If you do not have a copy of this, one may be obtained from the Undergraduate Teaching part of the Departmental website. The latter handbook gives information on how these courses fit into particular degree structures. Please note that it cannot be guaranteed that all courses offered will run and that only the most usual prerequisites for courses are given.
Lists What are lists? Masers, lasers and their interaction with atoms and molecules Summary The study of atomic and molecular physics is a key component of undergraduate courses in physics, because of moleckles fundamental importance to the understanding of many aspects of modern physics. Bransden B. This book is excellent for a 1st year graduate course on Atomic and Molecular physics. The initial sections cover QM in as good and concise a manner as Ive ever seen.
Isolated atoms[ edit ] Atomic physics primarily considers atoms in isolation. Atomic models will consist of a single nucleus that may be surrounded by one or more bound electrons.
