Game Theory

The Basic Library List Committee suggests that undergraduate mathematics libraries consider this book for acquisition. As the title implies, this text develops the theory of statistical decisions within the framework of a game played between the statistician and nature. The first two chapters of the text provide the framework upon which the content will be built, while the third chapter exposes the reader to the general structure of statistical games. The remainder of the text is truly a treat for the reader. In chapter 4 the authors introduce the notion of utility as a measure of satisfaction with the outcome of a game.

Game Theory pp Cite as. Decision theory is the science of making optimal decisions in the face of uncertainty. Statistical decision theory is concerned with the making of decisions when in the presence of statistical knowledge data which sheds light on some of the uncertainties involved in the decision problem. Any attempt at a general review of decision theory is thus doomed; all that can be done is to present a description of some of the underlying ideas. Unable to display preview. Download preview PDF.

Game theory is the study of the ways in which interacting choices of economic agents produce outcomes with respect to the preferences or utilities of those agents, where the outcomes in question might have been intended by none of the agents. The meaning of this statement will not be clear to the non-expert until each of the italicized words and phrases has been explained and featured in some examples. Doing this will be the main business of this article. First, however, we provide some historical and philosophical context in order to motivate the reader for the technical work ahead. Game theory in the form known to economists, social scientists, and biologists, was given its first general mathematical formulation by John von Neuman and Oskar Morgenstern For reasons to be discussed later, limitations in their formal framework initially made the theory applicable only under special and limited conditions. This situation has dramatically changed, in ways we will examine as we go along, over the past seven decades, as the framework has been deepened and generalized.
