It is hard to imagine there's anything left to learn about punk. The punk years have become a British landmark as exhausted of mystery as the Sixties, its styles dissected by cultural commentators and its sounds and attitudes constantly referenced by bands. But what of punk's aftermath? Often dismissed as an awkward period in which punk's gleeful ructions petered out into the vacuity of the Eighties - into New Wave and worse - the post-punk era of music has gone largely uncelebrated until very recently. In the last few years, a clutch of bands such as Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party, Interpol and the Rapture have shot to prominence with an arty guitar pop which owes a huge debt to this morning after the revolution before. Post-punk resisted revisiting with some good reason. With the exception of Joy Division, who slotted straight into rock'n'roll mythology when their singer, Ian Curtis, committed suicide, and Public Image Limited, whose singer, John Lydon, never quite outpaced his Sex Pistols infamy, these bands had enjoyed relatively little in the way of fame or fortune in their lifespans.

Paul says Warning: do not read this book unless you have ready access to Spotify or some other music subscription service that allows you to listen to entire albums without purchasing them, or else you will go bankrupt trying to catch up withthe Fall, James Chance and the Contortions, the Associates and a hundred other bands with which you were vaguely familiar but suddenly find fascinating thanks to Simon Reynolds' writing. This is the best work of music history, and oneof the best history books, I have ever read. Reynolds is more critic than fan but more fan than sycophant, which makes his examination of what we now call "alternative" music from both exuberant and objective. He also does anexcellent job of evoking the milieus in which various postpunk genres arose -- now I know exactly why Manchester has so much to answer for. Reynolds takes his job as a historian seriously, so when he writes about a band, he describesboth its intent and its impact, noting the occasional chasm between the two.

Review of Rip It Up and Start Again: Post-Punk 1978-1984 by Simon Reynolds

Simon Reynolds looks into not only the developments of bands and sub-genres, but labels, zines, and local scenes to give a complete picture of the patchwork of the industry in a pre-digital era. The book is an increasingly valuable artefact; included in the over interviews are legends such as Tony Wilson and Ari Up who have passed since its publication, as well as an interview with John Peel. Rip It Up … makes encouraging reading just now.

See a Problem?

Post a Comment. I'd been interested in post-punk bands for a few years by that point, mostly by virtue of alternative-oriented family members and friends. The book came at just the right moment as a wave of nostalgia for this kind of music was cresting. Oddly, though, the book barely spends any time at all on most of the aforementioned bands. In fact, if you really study the author, it becomes apparent that he doesn't even really like The Cure or the Banshees, and I'm not sure about Depeche Mode and Bauhaus, either.

A brilliant new survey and intelligent exploration of progressive rock, from its origins through to contemporary artists. Nicely illustrated, it includes rare photos of artists like Kate Bush and Genesis. At last, here is a book that gives prog its due respect as a vital part of the history of rock music, without tying it to a simplistic narrative of over-ambition, decadence and decline. The best thing about the book is its comprehensive, nuanced definition of what counts as progressive. Hegarty and Halliwell have rescued progressive rock from the condescension of history by crafting a work that is smart, sympathetic, and impressively sweeping in its coverage of a much derided, yet enormously diverse and influential transnational music.
