Surrounded by steep mountains and small farmsteads, it stretches about 18km from Sognefjord through the small municipality of Aurland to the village of Gudvangen. Since the area obtained World Heritage Site status, tourism there has exploded. Aurland, home to fewer than 2, permanent residents, now welcomes roughly 1m visitors every year.

Venice. From overtourism to sustainable tourism

This makes it necessary to try and understand what the phrase sustainable tourism means, to avoid the risk that the concept gets used like a slogan that is adaptable to different interpretations. Following these definitions it is quite clear how for many years in Venice tourism has not been sustainable, not from the social point of view, or the environmental. For these reasons the vast majority of tourists do not return to Venice, and limit their visit to a short or very short. Their massive presence deforms the city, which adjusts to their needs, and overtaxes it due to the burden on public transportation and the fragile pedestrian street system. So it should not seem too strange, this apparent paradox of a city visited by millions of tourists, which in high season has hotel vacancies, or that, although the city offers extraordinary museums, one sees museums outside the Marciana area half empty. The persistence of this unsustainable situation has for many been a glimpse of the next and definitive transformation of Venice into a theme park for day visiting tourists, that is, the death of Venice as a living city, with all its traditions, culture, memory, experience and way of life.

World Heritage Sites: overtourism

At the end of the paper, a comparative analysis of the two investigated cases is presented with the aim of presenting the research results and designing a personal model and conceptual frame of action to create a more efficient management system for protected heritage at all levels. A narrow area of the research encompasses demarketing as a segment of both strategic marketing and strategic management in the managing of intangible cultural heritage. The hypothesis set in this paper is that the WHS management system is specific for including very stratified areas of management, as well as numerous stakeholders at multiple levels. This is why, in their work, the authors correlate the problem area of strategic management and demarketing to prove their research hypothesis. Strategic management is defined as strategic planning, whereas the demarketing aspect relates to strategic activities to regulate tourist consumption in a tourist destination the marketing aspect in general , and specifically, efforts to diminish the pressure of consumption on the destination the demarketing aspect. What is more, WHSs differ significantly in both nature and size, as well as the sociocultural and economic conditions they are found in.

PDF | The paper focuses on cultural heritage protection policies for the Unesco site identity of Venice, especially in areas with minor architecture, outside major tourist routes. the writer has been the contact person for the UNESCO Venice.

Venice. From overtourism to sustainable tourism

A New Era for Urban Tourism? The Case of Venice, Italy

Overtourism is now a term that is frequently used to describe the negative impacts of excessive tourism on a destination. The impacts of overtourism are numerous and even if the term is quite new, we can find traces of this concept already among scholars in the beginning of mass tourism. Plog, for example, related the evolution of the number of tourists in a destination to the type of tourists visiting that same destination.

In the last decades a number of studies have dealt with the negative impacts of tourism, still, there is a lack of research that explains why these impacts have emerged. The present article addresses this research gap, and after the identification of the different impacts, attempts to explore the reasons for their emergence through the case of Venice. Given that certain tourism impacts have been the focus of recent protests of Venetian residents, the article also tries to explore the connections between tourism-related issues and social movements that is, the reasons behind these demonstrations. The study is based on qualitative interviews with opinion leaders from local Venetian , regional Veneto Region and international European Union levels.
