Surrounded by steep mountains and small farmsteads, it stretches about 18km from Sognefjord through the small municipality of Aurland to the village of Gudvangen. The persistence of this unsustainable situation has for many been a glimpse of the next and definitive transformation of Venice into a theme park for day visiting tourists, that is, the death of Venice as a living city, with all its traditions, culture, memory, experience and way of life.
At the end of the paper, a comparative analysis of the two investigated cases is presented with the aim of presenting the research results and designing a personal model and conceptual frame of action to create a more efficient management system for protected heritage at all levels. A narrow area of the research encompasses demarketing as a segment of both strategic marketing and strategic management in the managing of intangible cultural heritage. The hypothesis set in this paper is that the WHS management system is specific for including very stratified areas of management, as well as numerous stakeholders at multiple levels. This is why, in their work, the authors correlate the problem area of strategic management and demarketing to prove their research hypothesis. Strategic management is defined as strategic planning, whereas the demarketing aspect relates to strategic activities to regulate tourist consumption in a tourist destination the marketing aspect in general , and specifically, efforts to diminish the pressure of consumption on the destination the demarketing aspect. In the last decades a number of studies have dealt with the negative impacts of tourism, still, there is a lack of research that explains why these impacts have emerged. The present article addresses this research gap, and after the identification of the different impacts, attempts to explore the reasons for their emergence through the case of Venice. Given that certain tourism impacts have been the focus of recent protests of Venetian residents, the article also tries to explore the connections between tourism-related issues and social movements that is, the reasons behind these demonstrations. The study is based on qualitative interviews with opinion leaders from local Venetian , regional Veneto Region and international European Union levels.
