Metrics details. This paper investigates the relationship between the formal and informal spheres of urban life and explores the change in the relation between them. Starting with a study of the evolution and different interpretations of the spatial concept of informality, we moved from a perspective based on the traditional dichotomies to concentrate on the relations between formal and informal.

Structural Reciprocity: Critical Overview and Promising Research/Design Issues

Reciprocity is a structural principle that has fascinated designers and builders throughout the world since ancient times. Further, no single text provides an exhaustive definition of the principle of structural reciprocity and it must be critically reconstructed from several different sources. This paper aims to fill in these gaps, providing a complete and annotated list of references, in which historical examples, as well as patents, research articles and terminological issues are discussed. A consistent definition of structural reciprocity is also proposed, and the promising developments of such a principle are outlined in order to guide designers and researchers in the future. The principle of reciprocity is based on the use of load-bearing elements which, supporting one another along their spans and never at the extremities, compose a spatial configuration with no clear structural hierarchy. An illustrative example will help the reader better understand the concept. Let us consider three glasses, arranged on a table at the vertices of a hypothetical equilateral triangle, and then imagine covering that area using just three kitchen knives.

Although the structural principle of closed circuits of mutually supporting beams was known by Leonardo Da Vinci and has been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years Popovic Larsen [8] , its rediscovery and renaming as the Reciprocal Frame, by the designer Graham Brown in , has led to more structures of this type being built in the UK over the last 20 years. In order to span longer distances than the length of the available timber beams the structural principle of mutually supporting beams was used in vernacular buildings and in studies by numerous architects and scientists. Although the generating rules are simple, the control of these structures has to date proven to be very complex because of the reciprocal dependency of the elements. The paper describes the development of a digital tool that shall facilitate the design of these structures and enhance the spectrum of architectural applications. The structural configuration of an assembly is constituted by means of a form-finding process, which is based on the individual members and its relations. Several parameters for these members enable the user to respond to contextual conditions such as plan form, height and number of supports, and to gradually refine the output.

Structural Reciprocity: Critical Overview and Promising Research/Design Issues

This paper deals with the use of reciprocal frames in temporary gridshell structures, such as architectural pavilions in expositions and installations. The lightweight and interwoven grid obtained by connecting short elements according to the reciprocity principle is structurally efficient and, at the same time, aesthetically pleasing, mainly due to the resulting tessellation. The paper firstly investigates the connection between efficiency and aesthetics. The last part of the paper investigates some temporary architectural pavilions from both an aesthetical and parametric point of view. In order to deepen our understanding of these structures, they are re-modelled according to a bottom-up approach by means of a constraint-based parametric CAD modeller. In this way, a reciprocal frame can be explored and modified by the parametric arrangement of its generative elements, which, like a natural organism, grows in self-generating forms. A reciprocal frame RF is a three-dimensional grillage structure based on elements beams, elongated elements or laminae that mutually support each other.

Reciprocal frame structures, a first academic approach to sustainable structures

Reciprocal frame structures: a systematic literature review and identification of critical points for design and production. Reciprocal Frame Structures RFs date from the Neolithic period, where they were originally produced in wood and comprised of small sized elements. It is also a structural system that can adapt to freeform and complex geometries, with great aesthetic potential, as indicated by several contemporary research studies.
